The word on the street is that the Ford Mustang Brit will be retired after 2020 and that the void will be filled by a new Mustang model that revives the classic Mach 1 name.

A prototype of the new Mustang was recently spotted with a new front mask, chunky exhaust tips, and a new rear aerodynamics package with a unique wing and diffuser combo.

The prototype also features an upgraded wheel and tire package, the latter of which appears to be a set of sticky Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The Brembo brake package is also not to be overlooked.

According to the photographer, the prototype's engine is a distinctive-sounding V-8, and the unit is most likely a version of Ford's ubiquitous 5.0-liter mill. The Mustang Brit has a 5.0-liter V-8 that produces 480 horsepower, and its successor should have similar power.

But will that car be called the Mustang Mach 1? No decision on that point has yet been made.

Ford at one point planned to use the Mach 1 name for its electric crossover SUV, the Mustang Mach E, but changed its plans due to fan backlash. Now it is rumored that the Mach 1 name will be used for a future muscle car, making a successor to the Mustang Brit make a lot of sense. It could also be a replacement for the Mustang Hybrid.

The Mach 1 name debuted with the 1969 Mustang and lasted until 1978. Ford then revived the Mach 1 for the 2003 and 2004 model years, and the name brought more power, Brembo front brake rotors, Tokico gas shocks and struts, lower and stiffer springs, anti-lock brakes, comfort-weave style leather interior, and a functional hood scoop.

Whatever the new Mustang model is called, expect it to debut later this year as a 2021 model. Ford also plans to unveil the Mustang Hybrid this year, so muscle car fans have a lot to look forward to.
