The Volkswagen Tiguan is the perfect choice for young families who want a spacious SUV but aren't ready to move up to a mid-size or full-size car.

The updated version is expected to arrive soon, as the prototype has been spotted wearing a little camouflage.

The current Tiguan was only released in 2017 but has been sold overseas since 2015, so it's no surprise that the updated version is being tested in the wild.

Prototypes have shown that the updated Tiguan has new interior components for the front and rear modified fascia and headlights. The prototype refers to the standard wheelbase version sold overseas, but similar changes should appear on the long-wheelbase Tiguan we get in the US.

The interior is also likely to be updated with a better infotainment system using a larger screen. It should also get the latest electronic driver assistance systems.

The big news is what will happen in the powertrain sector. Hybrids and high-performance variants are likely to get an update.

A prototype has also been spotted, presumably the Tiguan R. This variant should get the same powertrain as the Golf R, that is, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four with 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission should also be part of the package.

For the plug-in hybrid variant, expect a small turbocharger coupled to a single electric motor. In addition, a battery with a capacity of about 14 kilowatt-hours will be installed, allowing for a range of about 20 kilometers.

The updated Tiguan is expected to debut later this year as a 2021 model.
