Legendary Nissan GTP ZX Turbo to be featured at Monterey Car Week 2024

The Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo was one of the most powerful cars in the GTP class from 1985 to 1990, even outperforming the dominant Porsche 962. The following year, Nissan took the constructors' title.

The original model will wow spectators at the 2024 Monterey Car Week this month.

Nissan announced Thursday that the GTP ZX-Turbo will make an appearance at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in Laguna Seca from August 14-17. The car will be chassis number 8801, recently fully restored at the Z Car Garage in San Jose, the same car that Brabham drove with John Morton in 1988, winning eight consecutive races

.

The first GTP ZX-Turbo was built by Lola Cars in England and was initially called the Lola T810. It was then fully developed by Electramotive Engineering in California. Its purpose was to enhance the Nissan name after Datsun was discontinued in 1986. [The GTP ZX-Turbo wore the doorstop-like bodywork characteristic of prototype racing cars of the day and was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, similar to the engine in the 300ZX sports car sold at the time. While competitive in shorter races, the GTP ZX-Turbo struggled with reliability in longer distance events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona.

Nevertheless, this car and its successor, the NPT-90, became Nissan's pinnacle in prototype sports car racing, with several failed attempts to win top-level endurance races in the 1990s and later in the ill-fated GT-R LM Nismo LMP1 in 2025 campaign.
