2025 Ford Mustang GTD Performance Pack turns aero into speed

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is nearing a production start later this year, and Ford provided some new details about the car Wednesday ahead of its reveal this weekend at the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Mustang GTD is a track-focused, street-legal version of Ford's iconic Mustang sports car, producing more than 800 hp from a supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 engine. Prices start at about $325,000, but Ford plans to offer options to further enhance performance and raise the sticker.

These options include the aptly named "Performance Pack," developed by Ford to ensure the Mustang GTD meets its performance goal of a sub-7 minute Nürburgring lap time. The pack includes a larger front splitter, dive planes, additional underbody flaps, and the previously announced rear wing drag reduction system.

The Lightweight Pack also includes 20-inch magnesium wheels, a unique front mask design, and deleted sound deadening material. Ford has not disclosed how many pounds can be saved by the Lightweight Pack. Nor has it disclosed whether the Lightweight Pack will be offered separately.

The Mustang GTD with the Performance Pack that will be shown at Le Mans will be a special Carbon Series model. If the Carbon Series is selected, the hood, roof, and rear deck will be exposed carbon fiber, and the wheels will be finished in a silver color called Magnetite. In addition, brake calipers in Grabber Blue, Race Red, and Black will be available, as well as stripes in body color or contrasting paint.

Ford also unveiled the Mustang GTD's interior on Wednesday. It features leather and synthetic suede upholstery, carbon fiber dash accents, Recaro bucket seats (front), and a rotary dial shifter for the standard eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The rotary-dial shifter, paddle shifters, and serial plate are all made of titanium taken from a decommissioned F-22 fighter jet. The rear seat has been removed, and in its place a polycarbonate window offers a view of the push-rod rear suspension with Multimatic adaptive spool valve (ASV) dampers.

The flat-bottomed steering wheel features buttons for adjusting suspension stiffness and exhaust mode. Two additional buttons forward of the rotary dial shifter access the track app page and activate the front axle lift system.

Ford will offer the Mustang GTD for the 2025 and 2026 model years. The automaker has not disclosed how many models will be built or whether production will be expanded beyond those years. Prospective buyers will need to complete an application process. Ford says it has received more than 7,500 applications. The application process for Europe will begin on June 13.
