Romain Grosjean and the Lamborghini SC63

In 2024, Lamborghini entered both the IMSA Sports Car Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship with LMDh race cars in both the GTP and hypercar top classes, respectively.

Named SC63, the race car, like all LMDh cars, is equipped with a hybrid powertrain, but the internal combustion component is a V8 developed in-house by Lamborghini's Squadra Corse motorsport division.

A new video uploaded to IMSA's YouTube channel provides more details on the SC63. It was filmed prior to the team's entry in the 12 Hours of Sebring race this past weekend. The race was the second round of the sports car championship. Lamborghini missed the season opener at Daytona in January.

The SC63 finished 7th at Sebring, thanks to Matteo Cairoli, Andrea Caldarelli, and Romain Grosjean. Grosjean, a former F1 driver, appears in the video and talks about how great it was to drive the car.

The debut race for the SC63 was the opening round of the World Endurance Championship held in Qatar in early March. There, drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Daniil Kvyat, and Eduardo Mortara drove the car to a 14th place finish.

Lamborghini has partnered with the Italian racing team Iron Lynx in the LMDh program, competing as Lamborghini Iron Lynx.

All LMDh race cars feature a hybrid powertrain using a controlled Xtrac transmission, battery, and motor-generator unit to keep costs down. Constructors are free to choose the internal combustion components of the powertrain, and Lamborghini has chosen to develop its own 3.8-liter V-8 twin turbo for the LMDh program. The constructor can also choose the transmission gear ratio and the amount of differential slip.

The constructor must also use a control chassis similar to the current LMP2 chassis, sourced from one of four suppliers: Dallara, Ligier, Multimatic, or Oreca. Lamborghini chose the Ligier chassis. Since Lamborghini was the first constructor to choose this chassis, it was able to work with Ligier to tailor the specifications to its own needs.
