New Z71 Grade for 2024 Chevrolet Traverse Aims for Trailheads

The Chevrolet Traverse has been redesigned for the 2024 model year, with the addition of a new Z71 grade for off-roaders.

The new Traverse, unveiled Monday, promises space and safety for family fun while adding more standard features and improved performance.

Select Z71s add factory upgrades, including 1-inch more ground clearance and track width, and 18-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. All-wheel drive is also standard on the Z71, but the twin-clutch design of the rear axle is exclusive to the Z71. It can split drive torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the rear wheels.

Other upgrades to the Z71 include unique dampers with hydraulic rebound, a unique front mask for improved approach angles, aluminum skid plates, hill descent control, and a drive mode specifically for rough terrain. A trailering package is also standard.

The 2024 Traverse lineup also includes the LS, LT, and RS.

All grades are equipped with a new 2.5-liter turbo four with 315 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque and an 8-speed automatic transmission. This replaces the 3.6-liter V-6 that produced 310 hp and 266 lb-ft, a 19% increase in torque over the current Traverse.

Front-wheel drive is standard on all grades except the Z71, where all-wheel drive is standard. When properly equipped, towing capacity is up to 5,000 lbs.

Inside the new Traverse, three rows of seats remain, but a new 17.7-inch touchscreen infotainment system highlights the dashboard. General Motors' Super Cruise automatic driving assistance feature will be available. Also standard will be safety features such as active lane control and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection.

The 2024 Traverse will go on sale early next year. More details, including pricing information, will be announced closer to launch.

The current Traverse was introduced in 2018 and remains one of the most popular mid-size SUVs on the market. Last year's sales approached 100,000 units, and sales are on track to increase even more in 2023.
