Hyundai Announces Suspension of Sales and Recall of Vehicles with 8-Speed DCT

Hyundai has issued a recall for certain vehicles equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The transmission failure could cause the vehicle to enter a failsafe mode, in which power is reduced for approximately 30 seconds and then shuts off completely, potentially resulting in a crash. Drivers may notice a warning light on the instrument cluster in addition to a warning message before the vehicle enters the failsafe mode. Hyundai said it is aware of 229 instances between June 1 and September 26 in which this problem manifested itself.

The recall affects a total of 53,142 vehicles in the U.S. and covers the following models:

2021-2022 Santa Fe 2021-2022 Sonata 2021-2022 Veloster N 2022 Santa Cruz 2022 Elantra N 2022 Kona N

In addition, dealers are asked to suspend sales of the affected models until the remedy is implemented. The remedy requires dealers to update transmission control software and possibly replace the transmission.

This service will be provided free of charge and owner notification letters will be mailed on December 5. Those seeking further information can contact Hyundai at 1-855-371-9460 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (see recall campaign number 22V746000).
