Spy shot of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC

Mercedes-Benz's next-generation GLC has been spotted for the first time.

The current GLC was introduced in 2016 and received a mid-cycle facelift in 2020. In Mercedes tradition, a redesigned model should appear in 2022 as the 2023 model.

The new GLC will likely grow slightly for the next generation, giving the recently launched GLB a little more space and adding interior space. Nevertheless, the new GLC is still in the small SUV segment and is destined to battle it out with the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

The proportions have also changed slightly. The hood seems to have been stretched (presumably to accommodate the inline 6-cylinder engine) and the roofline lowered. The rear haunches also appear to be more pronounced. The result should be a sleeker, sportier appearance than the current model.

Under the skin, the platform for the soon-to-be redesigned C-Class will be used. In other words, it will be an updated version of Mercedes' MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform that underpins the current GLC.

The updated platform will result in significant weight savings, primarily through increased use of aluminum over steel. This is made possible by advanced joining techniques, including welding of aluminum and steel.

As for the powertrain, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 will likely remain the base option. On top of that, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder will likely replace the current generation's V-6. Most, if not all, GLC variants will feature some electrification, including the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLC63, which may downsize to a four-cylinder.

Engineers are also likely developing a new GLC coupe. It should appear about six months to a year after the regular GLC.
