Spy shots and video of the 2021 BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series is now in its seventh generation, and the latest model will soon reach the midpoint of its lifecycle; as is BMW tradition, the car will receive a facelift to keep it looking and feeling fresh for the second half of its lifecycle.

A prototype of the facelifted version of the 5 Series sedan has been spotted ahead of its May 27 reveal.

A facelift version of the 5 Series wagon sold overseas and a high-performance M5 have also been tested. The latter will produce a new M5 CS model that will sit above the current M5 Competition.

As for the other 5 Series, the new headlights are clearly visible on this prototype, and according to the camouflage material, the grille and front mask will also change. Similarly, the rear mask may be modified, and the taillight signature may be tweaked.

The grille, in particular, will likely feature the merged double-kidney design used on the latest 3 and 7 Series. Thankfully, the changes do not appear to be as extensive as the 7 Series facelift. The current 5 Series is already a handsome beast.

The 5 Series is not expected to see major changes to its powertrain lineup, as several new powertrains have already been introduced for the 2020 model year. For example, the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid has a new battery and longer electric range, the M550i has a more powerful V8 engine, the 530i and 540i will be more powerful, or the 5 Series after minor changes mild hybrid technology could be added.

It is not clear if there will be any changes to the cabin, but an updated infotainment system and new electronic driver assistance features are likely.

Expect a reveal next week, and expect the facelifted 5 Series to arrive in dealerships later this year as a 2021 model.
