Audi's electric super sedan based on the Porsche Taikan platform has been spotted in prototype form.

The car is a production version of the 2018 E-Tron GT concept, which will likely be unveiled in 2021 as a 2022 model. It will likely make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this year.

The E-Tron GT concept had a low, sexy look. Not surprisingly, the designers accurately carried over the lines of the concept into the production version. This was fully recognized by Audi's chief designer Marc Lichte during the concept's debut.

The prototype has the same elongated headlights, a similarly shaped grille (which Audi calls a "sensor grille" because electric cars don't need a grille) and the same taillights across the width of the car.

Beneath the striking exterior is a high-performance EV platform known internally as the J1; the E-Tron GT is expected to utilize the largest 96 kWh battery developed for the platform and electric motors on each axle. Thanks to the J1 platform's fast charging capability, E-Tron GT owners will be able to charge the battery to 80% in about 20 minutes; the EPA estimates the range will be about 200 miles.

Audi is also expected to use the Taycan's two-speed transmission so that the car can efficiently handle the high speeds required by Germany's autobahn network. The E-tron GT will not simply be a rebadged Taycan model: both cars will share a common design. The only exterior element is the windshield.

And not to step on the heels of its Porsche relatives, the E-tron GT's peak power will be around 590 hp, which puts it between the Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo. A more powerful E-Tron GT Performance may be introduced in the future.

Production of the E-Tron GT will take place at the specialized Böllinger Höfe plant, located near Audi's main plant in Neckarsulm, Germany. It is at this plant that Audi currently produces the R8 supercar.

More information will be revealed as it is developed.
