BMW is working on the next-generation 4 Series, which will complement the updated 3 Series coming in 2019.

We've previously seen prototypes of updated versions of the 4 Series Convertible, M4 Coupe, and M4 Convertible.

An electric-powered i4 sedan is also planned to replace the current 4 Series Gran Coupe.

BMW is clearly looking to evolve the new 4 Series, and the dramatic changes will be in the front end. The latest images clearly show a huge grille that fully replicates the design of last year's Concept 4, which previewed the 4 Series. The design is likely to be controversial, to say the least.

Based on the CLAR platform developed by the BMW Group for rear-wheel drive vehicles, the main powertrains should be turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder inline engines with displacements of 2.0 and 3.0 liters, respectively. The 2.0-liter will be offered for the 430i, while the 3 .0-liter will be offered in the M440i M Performance model. Diesel and plug-in hybrid variants should also be available, but only the latter will likely be sold in the US.

Dynamics enthusiasts can look forward to the next-generation M4: BMW M's new S58 engine is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that should produce around 473 hp in the M4 and 503 hp in the M4 Competition. This new engine debuted on the X3 and X4 M models in 2020.

The interior will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern BMW. In addition to a large infotainment screen, it features a digital instrument cluster. It will also have natural voice activation.

The updated 4 Series will debut in late summer. Sales should begin in late 2020 or early next year. The 4 Series convertible and the M4 twin should be available right after the debut. i4 should be available in late 2021.
