Haltech is developing a four-stage turbocharger for the LS-based V12.

Remember the wild V12 engine we told you about a few years ago that combined two LS V8s?

The engine management experts at Haltech, based in Lexington, Kentucky, developed a four-turbocharger setup for that engine.

The V12 is a 9.7-liter (592 cubic inches) monster built by Australian company V12LS. Based on a pair of V8 LS1s sourced from General Motors, it features a one-piece aluminum block, custom-built block heads and intake manifolds, cams and crankshaft.

Haltech received one of these engines for development. When first run on the dyno, it produced around 700 hp. Haltech is still developing the turbocharged version and has not yet disclosed its output, but it is easy to assume that it will be of hypercar level.

The turbochargers are Garrett GT3582R, which may seem small for such a large engine. However, each handles the exhaust flow of just three cylinders, which is about 2.5 liters of engine displacement. In testing, Haltech got only a paltry 7 psi boost from the turbocharger. [Other features include a custom intercooler, a 50-millimeter Gen-V Race Port purge valve, and four 40-millimeter TurboSmart Gen-V Compgate exhaust valves. Yeah, it's not hard to imagine how crazy that sounds. Check out the video above.

Haltech is currently only using this engine for testing and developing new components. If a price can be negotiated, the company would be happy to build samples for a customer.

Where can we see an engine like this? Factory Five Racing is working on a new supercar called the F9R, which is being developed to be powered by a monster V12LS. It is hoped that it will be equipped with a turbocharged version as well.
