BMW has unveiled the refreshed 3 Series for 2019, and today we've gotten new spy shots and video of prototypes of the related 4 Series, specifically the 4 Series Convertible.

The updated 4 Series is expected to debut later this year, initially as a coupe and then a convertible. These are currently expected to appear in 2021.

High-performance M4 coupe and convertible models are also planned, as well as a new battery-powered i4 model that will replace the existing 4 Series Gran Coupe.

BMW is clearly looking to change the look of the new 4 Series, and dramatic changes will take place at the front. An oversized grille is expected, similar to the Concept 4 grille that heralded the 4 Series introduced last year. Another significant change, especially for the convertible, will be a soft-top roof instead of the current model's retractable hard top. The simpler and sleeker design should not only improve the appearance of the 4 Series Convertible, but also make it lighter and more dynamic. In addition, when folded down, the soft top takes up less trunk space.

Further weight reduction should be achieved by utilizing the CLAR multi-material modular platform that debuted on the 2016 7 Series, meaning that the new platform also has potential for electric powertrains.

The powertrains will be based on turbocharged inline four- and six-cylinder engines with 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter displacements, respectively: The 2.0-liter will be offered for the 430i, while the 3.0-liter will be offered for the M440i M Performance. A plug-in hybrid should also be in the plans, with the battery-powered i4 confirmed to produce up to 523 hp.

Fans of sporty styling can also expect to see the next-generation M4 in a convertible body: the new BMW M S58 engine is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that develops around 473 hp in the M4 and 503 hp in the M4 Competition. This new engine debuted on the X3 and X4 M models in 2020.

The interior of the new 4 Series will be familiar to anyone who has driven a modern BMW. There is a digital instrument cluster in addition to a large infotainment screen. It should also feature natural voice activation.

Updates will be released as development progresses.
