McLaren engineers have spotted a prototype of a new hybrid model that will be positioned as the entry-level model in the sporting lineup.

The hybrid was identified because previous test mules, which used a makeshift 570S body to hide the new mechanics, had the word "hybrid" on the exterior and thick electrical cables leading to the engine bay.

The final prototype is heavily camouflaged, but the taillights, high-mounted exhaust and rear diffuser are clearly visible.

Digital dashboard photos of one of the test mules also seem to reveal the car's final design: they clearly show a computer-generated image of a car that looks like a scaled-down 720S.

Interestingly, the mystery car lacks the side vents common to the current Sport Series lineup. This suggests that the side air intakes shown on the latest prototypes are moulages hiding the true design.

The interior shots also show a new dashboard design that will likely be used on the next generation Sport Series.

McLaren has stated that all models in the lineup will be electrified by 2025, some with V6 engines; perhaps a V6-based hybrid setup is being tested here.

McLaren is also testing a 720S-based hybrid mule, but this model will likely be powered by a deconstructed version of the V8-based hybrid setup found in the McLaren Speedtail. Power output for the hypercar is a staggering 1,035 hp.

The new Sport Series hybrid is likely to debut later this year or early 2021.
