The first prototype of the new Maserati Quattroporte has been spotted.

This is the second update to the current Quattroporte model, which will see this large sedan get electrification. The exterior will also get some design changes, and the interior will likely get new technology.

No powertrain details have been released, other than confirmation that a new plug-in hybrid variant will be available. A battery-powered Quattroporte is not expected until after a design update in 2022 or 2023.

As for technology in the cabin, a new infotainment system and new electronic driver assistance systems are currently expected.

As mentioned above, the changes being made to the Quattroporte will be the second update for the car. The current generation of Maserati's flagship sedan was introduced in the 2014 model year, with the first update coming in 2017. The second update will be introduced in 2021.

Maserati has a busy period ahead of it. In fact, in just two years, Maserati plans to update and expand its entire lineup. A revival of sorts, with electrification at its core, was supposed to begin with a refresh of the Ghibli model unveiled in April, followed by the new MC20 supercar in May, and the Quattroporte and Levante in the summer. However, the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has disrupted progress and Maserati has postponed the launch until September.
