The Mercedes-Benz E-Class family is approaching the middle of its lifecycle, and a prototype of an updated representative has been spotted.

This prototype is for the Mercedes-AMG E63, but other E-Class representatives should receive similar updates. Prototypes of the updated E-Class sedan, E-Class coupe, E-Class station wagon, and E-Class all-terrain SUV sold overseas have also been spotted.

The current E-Class family was introduced for the 2017 model year, initially as a sedan. According to Mercedes tradition, the updated model is due in 2021.

The headlights will be redesigned to be similar to those on the latest GLE SUV. This should further separate the E-Class family from the more compact C-Class, which the current E-Class looks very similar to.

The taillights will also be updated to a horizontal shape similar to the CLA-Class, and the front and rear fascias will also be redesigned. The grille will become slightly wider, giving the E63 a more aggressive and menacing look.

It's not entirely clear what the designers have in store for the interior, but it's possible that Mercedes' latest infotainment system will be added: known as MBUX, it works like a smartphone or tablet with a large screen. It features a large touchscreen that can be operated like a smartphone or tablet. The infotainment system also features natural voice activation.

As for the powertrain, the E63 should retain the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, which could be supplemented by a mild hybrid system. Either way, maximum output should exceed 603 hp (E63 S).

There are also plans for an E63 station wagon from AMG and a refined E53. Do not expect any changes to the E53 powertrain, as the E43 will not be replaced by a light hybrid until 2019.

The updated E-Class family is expected to debut in the first half of 2020.
