Toyota Announces New Celica
Toyota's performance and renewed interest in sports cars may bring yet another gift to enthusiasts: the new Toyota Celica.
Speaking during last week's rally Japan, senior Toyota's Yuki Nakajima confirmed that the new Celica is in the pipeline, Autocar reported on Monday.
Nakajima said that work on the car had already begun, but stressed that it was still in its early days.
"We are making celica," he is quoted as saying. "Honestly, there's no sign of that for now. But there are a lot of people in the company who are eagerly waiting for Celica."
Toyota has alluded to the new Celica for years as part of a trio of sports cars, including the GR86 and high-end models, perhaps the Supra and the Hyundai MR2.The last Celica, the seventh generation of the nameplate, ended production 18 years ago.
Toyota also continues to protect the name "Celica".Most recently, we updated our trademark application in 2021.
And only this year, Toyota's self-published cartoon episode "Grip" will feature several potential new cars, including the new Supra, the new Celica, the new MR2, the new GR86, and the GR GT3. It is also already being tested as a docker.
What is not clear is whether the new celica will be equipped with a gas engine or an electric motor. According to Autocar, Toyota has been discussing whether to develop the car as an electric car or perhaps stick to a gas engine in a hybrid configuration. The automaker has said it planned an electric sports car and expanded the concept of an electric sports car in 2023 and 2021. We also confirmed the Lexus electric sports car in 2021 and revealed the Lexus electric sports concept.
