Cadillac was recognized for 2026 F1
After nearly 2 years of negotiations, Cadillac appears to be set to join the F1 grid in 2026.
General Motors announced on Monday an agreement in principle with F1 to launch its Cadillac-branded team and the corresponding power unit program, but the latter may not be ready in time for Cadillac's debut as F1's 11th team.
GM is affiliated with TWG Global and owns and operates multiple racing teams in other areas, including ANDRETTI Global, Wayne Taylor Racing and Spire Motorsports. Mario Andretti, the last American F1 champion, will be the team's director.
"My first love was Formula 1, and now — 70 years later — the F1 Paddock is still my happy place," the 1978 champion said in a statement.
Mario Andretti, who resigned as head of Andretti Global on 9 May, and his son Michael's drive helped launch the Cadillac F1 project to return to F1. GM has announced its intention to partner with Andretti Global for the Cadillac brand's F1 entry. In 2023, we confirmed the power unit project in the next 11 months.
The Cadillac-Andretti team was approved by the FIA, the sanction body of F1, but the project was rejected in 2026 by F1Management, the commercial rights holder of the sport. If GM had implemented plans to build its own power unit by that time, the door would have been left open for Cadillac to join the grid in 2028.
Andretti and GM continued to work on the F1 project after the initial bid was rejected. GM said it will continue to focus on "aerodynamics, chassis and component development, software and vehicle dynamics systems" that will spread to Fisher's, Indiana, Charlotte, North Carolina, Warren, Michigan, and Silverstone, England, since F1 entries were first announced in 2023/1. It claims to be bringing together a team working on "simulation." GM also said it is eager to make Cadillac a full work team that will manufacture both its own chassis and power units, indicating that "by the end of 10 years," the power unit's timeline for 2028 is still in effect. That is why Cadillac will have to buy power units from different manufacturers in the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The new rules, which will come into force in 2026, will maintain the form of a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid V-6, but with reduced power from the engine and a hybrid system
if it reaches the grid in 2026, Cadillac will be the first new F1 team since 2016, when Haas arrived.
