Ferrari F80, a 1,184-horsepower V-6 hybrid vehicle, is unveiled.

Ferrari unveiled the F80 hypercar, the long-awaited successor to the LaFerrari, on Thursday.

The car is the latest in Ferrari's special series, which includes the 288 GTO, F40, F50, and Enzo in addition to the LaFerrari, and the first to feature a V-6 engine.

The mid-mounted V-6 engine forms part of a hybrid system and is connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The newly developed unit is derived from the V-6 engine of Ferrari's Le Mans-winning 499P LMH, and its displacement is comparable to that of a 3.0-liter racing car. It also features a twin-turbocharged system, with each turbo equipped with an electric compressor designed to increase boost pressure before the exhaust gases are fully charged, just as in Formula One.

The V-6 engine revs to 9,200 rpm and delivers a peak of 888 hp on its own. However, it is linked to three electric motors, two on the front axle and one in the rear. The two front motors each produce 140 hp and the rear motor 80 hp, and also recovers energy during braking. The all-wheel drive configuration is similar to that used by Ferrari in the SF90 Stradale, and like that car, the rear motors help to torque fill the engine.

The powertrain has a combined output of 1,184 hp, the highest output of any Ferrari road car to date, allowing the F80 to deliver true hypercar performance. On Ferrari's Fiorano test track, the F80 recorded a lap time of 1 minute 15.3 seconds. This is 4.4 seconds faster than the LaFerrari and several seconds faster than the new SF90 XX Stradale. Ferrari claims a 0-62 mph time of 2.15 seconds, a 0-124 mph time of 5.75 seconds, and a top speed of 217 mph. It also has a dry weight of 3,362 lbs.

Like the LaFerrari, carbon fiber is used not only in the body but also in the central monocoque structure; in the F80, the central pipes are as thin as possible to reduce drag and weight. In particular, the driver's seat is separated from the passenger's seat by a rising center console, as in the Chevrolet Corvette. In addition, the driver's seat is placed slightly forward of the passenger's seat.

The F80 also boasts a new steering wheel developed specifically for this car. It is slightly smaller than the La Ferrari's steering wheel and features a flat top and bottom. In addition, physical buttons have been restored on the left and right spokes, replacing the full digital layout used by Ferrari in recent years.

On the exterior, Ferrari adopted a muscular shape clearly inspired by the F40, especially when viewed from the rear 3/4 angle. Aerodynamics and cooling requirements played a major role in shaping the car, with Ferrari requiring over 2,200 pounds of downforce at 155 mph. Also contributing to the downforce is an active suspension system that contributes to the ground effect. The suspension was developed with Multimatic and features active inboard dampers and 3D-printed upper wishbones.

The F80 is limited to 799 units worldwide, and all production slots have already been filled by loyal customers who were offered the opportunity to purchase one. Priced at $3.9 million, additional open-top versions will eventually be produced, as was the case with the LaFerrari, which was limited to 499 units.

Like the recently unveiled McLaren W1, which replaced the P1, the F80 is the successor to one of the cars that formed the original hypercar trinity a decade ago. no new Porsche hypercar has yet been found to replace the 918 Spyder. The company teased the possibility of an electric hypercar with last year's Mission X concept, but has yet to announce production.
