Rivian designed accessory system with removable hitch assembly

Rivian is seeking to patent a vehicle accessory system that functions like a trailer hitch.

Rivian's patent application for this feature was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 4, but Rivian did not file the application until late 2022. In this document, Rivian details the use of two brackets to hold the accessory, which are attached to each other using a set of pins.

One bracket is attached to the vehicle, while the second bracket slides into it and is held in place by pins. the second bracket is used to hold accessories such as cargo carriers or bike racks Rivian states in his application that it serves as a mounting point for.

The same assembly can also be used for trailers and, unlike conventional trailer hitches, is flexible, Rivian adds. This allows for a larger launch angle while towing a trailer, making this hardware ideal for overlanding.

The accessories can be attached and detached manually or electronically by connecting to the vehicle's touch screen or steering wheel controls, Livian suggests. The accessory brackets can also be hidden behind body cladding when not in use, maintaining the clean appearance and aerodynamics of the vehicle exterior, the automaker notes.

According to the patent application documents, Rivian is working on several possible accessory designs, including a redesigned version of the camp kitchen. However, Rivian needs to launch the $45,000 R2 SUV and begin production of the R3 and R3X hatchbacks in time for the 2026 launch schedule. A $5 billion partnership with the Volkswagen Group will help finance these projects.
