Gas and hybrid Porsche Cayennes will live on beyond 2030

Porsche is working on a next-generation Cayenne powered solely by batteries, but the current gasoline and hybrid Cayenne models aren't going anywhere.

Porsche said Thursday that it plans to continue selling the current third-generation Cayenne beyond 2030, especially alongside a new electric Cayenne expected to go on sale in 2026 (likely as a 2027 model in the US), with more to keep the look and feel fresh. Updates are planned, he said, with the V-8 engine now available on its own or in combination with a plug-in hybrid system.

The current Cayenne was introduced for the 2019 model year and received its first major update in 2024.

Porsche's announcement comes just days after the automaker announced that it is shifting its EV strategy due to slower-than-expected demand growth. Porsche said it would abandon its previous goal of having 80% of its sales be EVs by 2030.

A prototype of the electric Cayenne has been spotted testing for several months. The design is similar to the 2024 Macan electric car addition, only on a larger scale. Porsche also sells the current gas-powered Macan alongside the electric version, but announced in early July that production of the gas-powered Macan will end in 2026.

Porsche announced Thursday that the electric Cayenne will use a further development of the 800-volt PPE (Premium Platform Electric) EV-specific platform debuted in the electric Macan. While not yet confirmed, the electric Cayenne could offer a four-motor powertrain. Porsche said it is developing just such a system in 2019.

A large, three-row electric SUV, codenamed “K1,” is also in development and is expected to arrive a year after the electric Cayenne. This model will ride on a separate EV platform developed by Porsche and known as SSP Sport.
