Recall Fixes Toyota to Replace V-6 Engines in Tundra and Lexus LX

Toyota will replace the engines in more than 100,000 Tundra full-size pickup trucks and Lexus LX luxury SUVs as a recall measure, Automotive News reported Thursday.

Toyota announced the recall in May, which at the time covered 102,000 Tundra and LX vehicles equipped with twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engines. Toyota stated at the time that these engines could contain machining debris, which could result in engine knocking, poor engine revs, and the inability to start and continue the engine.

Dealers will replace the engines free of charge. No NHTSA information was posted at the time of publication, but a Toyota spokesperson told Automotive News that customers will be notified with more details this month, adding that customers will be offered loaner or rental vehicles during the engine replacement, which is expected to take 13 to 21 hours to complete. during the engine replacement, which is expected to take 13 to 21 hours to complete, he added.

The Tundra and LX, long unchanged, have been redesigned for the 2022 model year. Both models now feature a twin-turbo V-6 engine (also available as part of the hybrid powertrain on the Tundra) in place of the naturally aspirated V-8 engine. The same V-6 engine has been available in the Toyota Sequoia since the 2023 model year, but exclusively for the hybrid system. No recalls have yet been issued for the Sequoia.

The Sequoia was part of a recall of 280,000 vehicles in February, including Tundras and LXs, to address transmission-related rollover risks. Toyota also recalled more than 168,000 Tundras in August 2023 due to leaking fuel lines. Additionally, in June 2022, shortly after the new model was launched, the company recalled Tundras because the rear axle housing could separate from the shaft.
