Russell is the surprise winner of the 2024 F1 Austrian Grand Prix.

George Russell of Mercedes-Benz AMG won the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, the 11th race of the 2024 Formula One season.

Russell started the race in third place and looked set to finish it, but a late race collision between leader Lando Norris (McLaren) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) opened the way for the Mercedes driver's second career win.

2nd place.

Second place went to McLaren's Oscar Piatri, 1.9 seconds behind the winner, and third to Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, 4.5 seconds behind.

After winning Saturday's sprint race and qualifying on pole, Verstappen looked like he would win the main race on Sunday as well. For most of the race it looked as if Verstappen would win, but he got a brilliant start and quickly opened up a gap on Norris in second place. However, a late last pit stop meant that the gap was less than two seconds.

Norris then made numerous overtaking attempts, but finally collided with Verstappen in turn 3 on lap 64. As a result, both drivers suffered flat tires and had to return to the pits. Norris had to retire due to the damage to his car, while Verstappen continued on, and although he received a 10-second penalty for the collision, he eventually finished the race in 5th place. Norris received a 5-second penalty.

Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari also suffered damage early in the race, getting the worst possible start when he was caught between Pias Tri and Red Bull's Sergio Perez entering turn 1 on the first lap. He was then forced to work his way up from the back of the grid and finished the race in 11th place.

At the end of the weekend, Verstappen remains the leader of the 2024 drivers' championship with a total of 237 points. Norris is second with 156 points and Leclerc is third with 150 points. Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship with 355 points. Ferrari is second with 291 points and McLaren is third with 268 points.

The next race is scheduled for July 5-7 at the British Grand Prix.
