Toyota will unveil its electric land cruiser concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show this week.

The concept of the new Land Cruiser Se, which appeared online over the weekend, shows that Toyota is considering an electric future for its iconic SUV, but most likely this future is more suitable for urban conditions than for hiking in the Sahara Desert.

The refined design of the concept looks more like a luxury SUV than a rugged off-road vehicle, and Toyota has confirmed that the monocoque body looks more like a car, rather than the typical body structure on the frame of SUVs.

Toyota confirmed that the concept has a wheelbase of 202.8 inches long and 120.1 inches long, although short in details. This is comparable to the upgraded 2024 Land Cruiser with a length of 193.7 inches and a wheelbase of 112.2 inches. The designers took advantage of the extra size to accommodate 3-row seats and provide ample space for 7 people, Toyota said.

All-wheel drive electrical systems and high-capacity batteries are likely to make up the powertrain. Toyota revealed over the summer that it is developing solid-state batteries for launches this decade that can provide more than 700 miles of mileage and a 10-80% DC fast charging time to about 10 minutes.

Toyota has already proposed the idea of an electric land cruiser. In 2021, Toyota released a prototype electric land cruiser based on the classic design of the 70 series of 1980, which Toyota produces for commercial buyers such as mining and forestry.

The Tokyo Motor Show will open its doors to the media on October 25. Toyota also uses the show to present the concept of electric pickups, electric sports cars and electric crossovers. Lexus' premium division will also introduce next-generation EV technology in the form of a refined sedan concept.

Toyota was in no hurry to switch to electric vehicles, but now it is planning one of the largest introductions of electric vehicles in the industry. Earlier, Toyota promised to release 30 electric vehicles worldwide by 2030 and make Lexus an electric vehicle brand in the United States, Europe, China and other parts of the world by 2035.
