2024 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Spy Shot

BMW is testing an updated version of its 2 Series Gran Coupe, a compact sedan first introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model.

This updated version is expected to arrive late this year or early next year as a 2024 or 2025 model. This model will appear along with an updated version of the related 1 Series hatchback, which will be sold abroad. Both models will use BMW Group's latest version of the FAAR platform, designed for front-wheel drive vehicles.

The 2 Series Gran Coupe prototype is heavily camouflaged, suggesting that significant changes are planned; there are rumors that BMW may market this car as a next-generation model.

The updated model's headlights have a new design, and the grille appears to be new as well. The front mask also has a new horizontal design. At the rear, the taillights have a new signature and the fascia appears to have a cleaner design.

On the interior, the 2 Series Gran Coupe appears to finally adopt the more modern dash design seen on the related 2 Series Active Tourer model sold overseas. This means a new center console with a larger infotainment screen and additional controls, including a small nub for changing gears, as opposed to the traditional upright lever.

The powertrain lineup was not revealed. In particular, the range-topping M235i will feature the current 2.0-liter turbo four with 301 hp. The same engine could be boosted to 312 hp, which is comparable to the output of the X1 M35i crossover coming in 2024. The latest prototype is for the M235i variant, as indicated by the huge brakes and quad exhaust tips.

A plug-in hybrid powertrain could also be added to the lineup, as there are no plans yet for an electric 2 Series Gran Coupe. The plug-in hybrid powertrain will likely be diverted from the 2 Series Active Tourer, which uses a three-cylinder engine and electric motor combination to produce up to 321 hp.

BMW is preparing another compact model that will probably be sold in the United States. A redesign of the current version of the X2 crossover sold in the U.S. is also being tested.
