Lamborghini's head of research and development said the electric supercar is "not now a

Lamborghini has confirmed plans to launch an EV later this decade as its fourth model line in 2021, but don't expect it to be a supercar.

Lamborghini's head of research and development, Reuven Mohr, said in an interview with Motor1 published Monday that EV technology is not advanced enough to be applied to a supercar. He also said it may not be ready even five or six years from now.

"For super sports cars, we don't think it's the right time [for EVs] at this point, probably not even for the next five or six years," he said.

The reason? It's not lack of pace, as companies like Rimac and Lotus have demonstrated with their electric hypercars Nevera and Evija, respectively, but rather the EVs' heavy weight and inconsistent performance.

"We want to avoid such weight increases. We don't want performance to be greatly affected by the battery's state of charge or temperature."

Lamborghini has not revealed what form the first EV will take, but in 2019 former CEO Stefano Domenicali suggested that the fourth model line would likely be a 2+2 grand tourer, similar to the modern Espada.

Lamborghini will also add electrification to its next generation of supercars. The successor to the Aventador, to be unveiled in the spring, will feature a newly developed V-12 engine combined with plug-in hybrid technology. The eventual successor to the Huracan is also expected to go the plug-in hybrid route, but will likely feature a turbocharged V-8 instead of the Huracan's V-10.
