Matte black Ferrari Enzo up for auction.

The only Ferrari Enzo delivered from the factory in matte black will be auctioned by RM Sotheby's at the Sassuolo, Italy auction house from December 5-7.

Matte black was never a standard Enzo color, but of the 400 cars completed, 20 were "extra campionarios" finished in custom colors like Bianco Avus White. Part of the latter group, this car (chassis number 136069) was commissioned by a member of the royal family of Brunei, according to the auction listing.

The Sultan of Brunei and his family amassed a vast car collection over the decades, once exceeding 5,000 cars. Many of these cars were customized. For example, Sultan ordered a Jaguar XJ220 with unique bodywork by Italian design house Pininfarina. By comparison, a one-off paint job was a relatively simple request.

The matte black Enzo went into production on June 8, 2004, and was completed on October 15 with the same black leather interior and carpet as the exterior. According to the auction listing, the car was temporarily stored at the London residence of the Bruneian royal family before being brought to the Asia-Pacific region.

The car recently underwent a cosmetic makeover by Carrozzeria Xanasi, the official paint shop for Ferrari's personalized cars and Icona one-offs. The work, which totaled over 110,000 euros (approximately $113,000 at current exchange rates), included a complete repaint, replacement of the headlights, taillights, engine cover glass, and interior switchgear that may have become sticky with age.

The Enzo was Ferrari's flagship supercar of the early 2000s, taking over where the F40 and F50 left off. It was also the last flagship to be powered by a naturally aspirated, non-electric V12, in this case a 6.0-liter engine producing 650 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. The Enzo's successor, the LaFerrari, introduced hybrid power, and it is likely that the LaFerrari successor we are testing will also have hybrid power.
