BMW pays homage to the M1 with the 644-horsepower, $159,995 XM PHEV SUV

One of the automotive industry's best-kept secrets has finally been revealed: to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its M Performance division, BMW M has created the first and only standalone M model since the M1. Oddly enough, it is a high-performance plug-in hybrid crossover SUV.

After multiple leaks, the 2023 BMW XM was officially unveiled Tuesday with 644 horsepower, a 30-mile electric range, a new V-8 engine, and BMW's latest design language. The flagship will cost $159,995 when it arrives in the first quarter of 2023. Because of its performance and pricing, the XM targets the high-performance hybrid version of the Porsche Cayenne.

New Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

The XM features a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain that produces 644 hp total power and 590 lb-ft of torque. A new twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 engine produces 483 hp, and an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission adds 194 hp. BMW says the XM accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has an electronically controlled top speed of 155 mph. With the optional M Driver's Package, the top speed increases to 168 mph, and in pure electric mode, the car hits a top speed of 87 mph.

All-wheel drive is standard, but a multi-plate clutch distribution system provides a power bias to the rear. The system includes 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 4WD Sand modes, which default to 4WD; 4WD Sport mode sends more power to the rear wheels and increases the rear wheel bias; 4WD Sand mode can only be turned on with the stability control disengaged, and a traction optimization program and locks the differential in low traction situations. The electronically controlled rear differential helps control understeer by varying power from side to side to push the XM out of corners.

The electric powertrain was developed for real-world use in motorsports, and the same concept is used in the M Hybrid LMDh racing car. preliminary testing by the EPA test cycle gives the XM a range of 30 miles. an official EPA evaluation has not yet been submitted. The 25.7kwh (usable energy) battery pack can be charged from 0% to 100% in 3.3 hours at a 240 volt outlet via a 7.4kw on-board charging system.

The driver chooses between hybrid, electric, and eControl driving modes. The default Hybrid mode provides full system power and a mix of electric motor and gas engine as needed. The electric mode keeps the powertrain running on electricity until it runs out, but the gas engine starts when the transmission is switched to manual mode or the driver depresses the accelerator pedal. eControl mode locks out the battery and keeps it charged. state and can be used for purely electric driving in urban areas or later if needed.

BMW XM: Red Label, but no air suspension

According to BMW, the XM Red Label model is the first in a series of limited edition red label XM models. Output has been increased to 735 hp and 735 lb-ft of torque, and each XM Red Label model will feature model-specific paint, wheels, upholstery, and trim. The first model will cost $185,995 when production begins in summer 2023.

The XM will use steel springs and adaptive dampers instead of air suspension. The double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle will feature aluminum components to help reduce weight, and BMW noted that the XM has a near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution with a large front and rear wheel camber to aid handling. However, this is likely offset by the massive 6,062-pound curb weight.

An electromechanical anti-roll bar system is standard; powered by a 48-volt electric motor and supercapacitors, the system can disconnect the fixed connection between each axle wheel while driving in a straight line. When cornering, the active system couples to counteract forces from the road surface by restraining the leaning of the vehicle body.

The XM is the first M-badged model to feature a rear axle steering system. Depending on road speed, the rear wheels rotate in the same or opposite direction as the front wheels; BMW has not elaborated on the speed or degree to which the wheels rotate.

BMWXM: Made in the U.S.A., available late 2023

The XM first debuted on the 2023 7 Series and has recently solidified BMW's design direction with its split-front lighting design, which was also used on the refreshed 2023 X7 The XM, which looks almost identical to the XM Concept, features a massive kidney grille illuminated by LED lipsticks. Active safety sensors are integrated into the lower front bumper.

The wells are fitted with large 23-inch wheels, and the rear has quad exhausts. The tailgate has a depression in the upper center and the BMW logo is etched into the top of the rear glass.

The XM's cabin will be familiar to anyone who has driven a recent BMW. The spartan dashboard has a curved screen wall, and the center console features the latest iDrive infotainment system controller; BMW says the two-row XM seats five, with plenty of room for rear-seat passengers. The XM is equipped with Vintage Merino Leather. Vintage Merino leather trim is also available to order.

The XM will be built at the Spartanburg, South Carolina plant.
