Circuit-focused 2024 Ford Mustang, dark horse targets 500-horsepower Coyote V-8

Ford unveiled the redesigned 2024 Mustang at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show on Wednesday, but the new design was not the only surprise. The latest addition to the lineup is a new Mustang Dark Horse model, a track-focused model powered by the familiar Coyote 5.0-liter V-8 engine with a target output of 500 hp.

The Dark Horse, whose trademark was discovered in June, is actually not a single model, but a new performance series. In addition to the regular Dark Horse, which is specialized for circuit driving but can still be driven on public roads, there will also be a circuit-specific Dark Horse S and a race-specific Dark Horse R.

The Dark Horse, which is specialized for circuit driving, is a model that many buyers will be interested in. It is comparable to the current Mustang's Mach 1 grade in that it boasts additional power, more aggressive aerodynamics, and a track-honed chassis. However, it doesn't turn the performance dial all the way up like previous Shelby Mustangs.

The power increase is due to the unique configuration of the 5.0-liter V-8 engine, which utilizes the connecting rods from the previous Shelby GT500, and a new dual-throttle body intake design that is said to improve airflow to the engine. Mated to this engine is a standard six-speed manual with titanium shifter balls and transmission oil cooler, but it can be swapped for the Mustang's 10-speed automatic. Also essential for long track days are an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a rear axle cooler, a more powerful cooling fan, and a unique radiator that is lighter than the stock one and offers better cooling performance.

As for the chassis, Ford's engineers have independently calibrated it, adding a larger rear sway bar, strut tower brace, K-brace, and upgraded front shocks. Magnetic ride dampers are standard at all four corners. Also included are a Torsen rear differential and powerful Brembo brakes in the front with six-piston calipers engaging 13.9-inch rotors.

Standard wheels are staggered 19-inch aluminum wheels wrapped with Pirelli P Zero tires, but lighter carbon fiber wheels will be available after launch.

Also available are stiffer springs, larger front and rear sway bars, an improved rear wing with integrated Gurney flaps, and 19x10.5-inch front and 19x11-inch rear wheels, or one inch wider at the front and rear than standard wheels. A handling package is also available that adds.

The dark horse is immediately recognizable thanks to unique styling treatments such as darkened LED headlight surrounds, darkened exhaust tips, gloss black grille with trapezoidal nose rills, and a unique front mask. Aerodynamic elements include a front splitter, side skirts, and a fixed rear wing. The Dark Horse is fitted with a unique badge with a horse facing forward and is painted in a special metallic shade called Blue Ember. Various graphics and blue paint for the brake calipers are also available.

The interior also receives treatments. The list includes a thicker steering wheel wrapped in suede with blue accent stitching. Blue stitching extends to the door panels and seats, around the gearshift, and on the center console, where the seats are also blue with a unique perforation pattern. Automatic-equipped models also get silver-colored shifter paddles.

The hardcore Dark Horse S and Dark Horse R models are not approved for use on public roads, and all features not required for circuit use are removed. Instead, they are equipped with an FIA-approved roll cage, safety net, race seat with safety belt (with passenger seat), and steering wheel with quick disconnects. It will also be equipped with electrical disconnects and a fire suppression system.

Most of the standard controls will be replaced by dedicated switches and knobs located on a new central panel. There will also be new controls for functions such as the pit speed limiter and performance data recorder.

Upgraded performance over the regular Dark Horse includes upgraded brakes, Multimatic DSSV dampers, adjustable rear wing, high-flow exhaust, hood pins, and tow hooks.

The Dark Horse R is similar to the S, but features a race-approved serialization that includes a new one-make series. It will also feature upgrades such as strategic seam welds, larger fuel cells, and unique wheels.

The 2024 Ford Mustang will be available at dealerships next summer. Specific launch dates and pricing for the dark horse model will be announced as that date approaches.
