Spy shots of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz Maybach GLS-Class: hints of a light facelift for the ultra-luxury SUV.

Mercedes-Benz appears to be in the early stages of developing an update to the Maybach GLS-Class, an ultra-luxury version of the full-size GLS-Class.

The current generation GLS-Class was introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model, with the Maybach version coming a year later.

As is Mercedes tradition, the GLS-Class should receive a mid-cycle update in the 2024 model year, and the usual SUV-oriented changes should be adopted for the Maybach version.

The latest prototype of the Maybach GLS-Class will have only light camouflage and minor cosmetic tweaks. We can expect a new front mask and new headlights inside. The grille is also likely to be changed.

The interior of the GLS-Class, including the Maybach version, will also receive tweaks in this update. According to sources, elements of the S-Class, such as the steering wheel design, will be adopted for the GLS-Class. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment system graphics should also be updated.

Powertrain plans are not clear, but a plug-in hybrid option is a possibility; the GLS-Class currently offers inline 6-cylinder and V8 turbocharged engines in mild hybrid versions. The Maybach version includes a GLS600 grade with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 that delivers 550 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque, with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup that temporarily adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft can be added.

The updated GLS-Class range, including a Maybach version, is expected to debut around early 2023. As noted above, the updated SUV should appear as a 2024 model.

Mercedes plans to expand the Maybach lineup over the next few years with more personalization options and limited edition models. Next in the lineup will be the Maybach SL-Class, which will also be available in a limited edition with a unique Speedster body.
