Spy shots of the 2024 Audi S4 Avant: speedy station wagon spotted

Audi has been testing prototypes of the redesigned A4, and the latest testers are for the sporty S4 model.

The prototypes are specifically for the S4 Avant wagon body style, but testers for the S4 sedan should also be available.

The current A4 and B9 were introduced for the 2017 model year, with a mid-cycle update for 2020. This redesigned A4, B10 should appear in the 2024 model year, with a likely debut in early 2023; the S4 is expected to debut alongside the regular model.

The S4 Avant prototype looks similar to the A4 Avant tester we have seen so far, but with some differences, including a lower ride height and quad exhaust tips. The wheels are also fitted with some covers and a torque sensor is mounted above the center cap. This is a device used to detect the amount of slip of the wheel during testing.

In the latest shot we can also clearly see the interior of the latest A4 series. The instrument cluster features a wide floating screen, the shift lever appears to be a new concept, and being a prototype of the S4, the tester also has a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Audi has confirmed that it will introduce only electric vehicles starting in 2026, meaning that this will be the last A4 generation with an internal combustion engine. As a result, the platform should be an updated version of the Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform used in the current A4, meaning a longitudinal engine and standard front-wheel drive.

The current S4 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that produces 349 hp. Expect this engine to carry over to the new generation, perhaps with the assistance of a mild hybrid system.

Interestingly, the redesigned A4 will reportedly be topped by two electrified RS variants developed by Audi Sport. If accurate, the electric models will likely be built on a different platform than those with internal combustion engines.
