Spy shots and video of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class: a mid-cycle update.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is going under the knife.

The GLE-Class will appear in its current form for the 2020 model year, and we should see this updated version go on sale next year as the 2024 model. A prototype of the updated mid-size SUV was spotted testing with a nearly disguised exterior and heavily camouflaged interior. A prototype of the modified GLE-Class coupe was also tested. Both body styles should appear around the same time.

The refreshed GLE-Class is distinguished by a new front mask design, clearly visible in these spy images, and updated headlights and taillights. Lighting details are covered in camouflage, but similar updates are expected, with eyebrow-like LED daytime running lights similar to those seen on the refreshed E-Class lineup in 2021. Updated wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires can also be seen on some prototypes.

Inside the heavily camouflaged prototype, a new steering wheel can be seen. Interestingly, it is not the twin-spoke steering wheel seen on the latest E-Class, but a new steering wheel design seen on the 2021 S-Class. The overall dashboard design appears to be unchanged. The dual 12.3-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment on the dashboard will likely be carried over, but expect the latest version of Benz's MBUX infotainment system.

The powertrain is also expected to be largely carried over. The base engine is a 2.0-liter turbo four; a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six should sit on top of that, and an enhanced version of the inline six with 48-volt mild hybrid technology should be available in the updated AMG GLE 53. 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, possibly electrified in some form, will be mounted in the AMG GLE 63. All engines will be mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes' latest suite of driver assistance systems will be available, including an automatic steering function for low-speed driving. A hands-off, eyes-off automated driving system might be offered in traffic jams. The new system will debut in the S-Class in select markets early next year.
