Spy shots of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback: a mid-cycle update is planned

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is about to come in for a round of updates, as evidenced by the prototypes that have been spotted numerous times over the past year.

These latest prototypes are for an updated version of the A-Class hatchback sold outside the US, but a prototype for the sedan variant we get here is also out testing.

The current A-Class was introduced in 2018 as a 2019 model. We should see an updated version introduced in 2022, possibly as a 2023 model.

The prototype is only lightly camouflaged and makes sense as an update. The fascia on both ends has been changed, as has the new mesh-pattern front grille. It also appears that a sensor for the electronic driver assistance system will be installed in the center of the grille at the location of the Mercedes logo. This sensor may be integrated with the improved A-Class logo.

It is not clear at this stage what powertrain changes are planned. A plug-in hybrid powertrain may finally be offered in the US with this update. It has been offered in other markets since 2019. The powertrain integrates a 1.3-liter inline four-cylinder and an electric motor-generator with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. System output is 217 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, and exhaust is discharged from the lower part of the vehicle.

The A-Class is currently offered in the U.S. only with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4. The base version has a modest 188 hp, but you can get the 302 hp A35 from AMG; the A-Class hatchback is available in A45 and A45 S grades in most markets, with 382 hp and 416 hp, respectively; a modified version of the A45 hatchback is also being tested; and a new A45 S hatchback is being tested. With any luck, the updated sedan body style will also get the A45 treatment.

A battery-powered A-Class is not expected. Mercedes was at one point planning to introduce an electric A-Class, but decided to concentrate on the crossover body style instead.

Stay tuned for updates as development progresses.
