Alfa Romeo GT Restomod with Giulia Quadrifoglio firepower

They say that perfection cannot be surpassed, but Germany's Emilia Auto is taking up the challenge. The company has revived the classic Alfa Romeo GT coupe by stuffing it with the engine of the modern Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Launched in 1963, the Alfa Romeo GT became an icon thanks to its elegant design and the popularity of sporty variants like the GTV and GTA. Named the Emilia GT Veloce, this restomod aimed to improve on the original in both styling and performance.

Power comes from the aforementioned Quadrifoglio 2.9-liter V-6 twin turbo, producing 500 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and is all-wheel drive.

The Emilia Auto also features Giulia's Brembo brakes and traction control system, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and state-of-the-art power steering. The independent suspension front and rear features KW coilovers.

All of these components were not designed to fit under the sheetmetal of a normal GT coupe, and this restomod is not exactly hidden. The tall hood and bulging fenders at least give the Emilia GT Veloce a more aggressive look, and it wears 19-inch wheels designed to look like original GT pieces.

The interior looks mostly original, right down to the large wood-trimmed steering wheel, but there are modern touches like the Recaro sport seats.

Emilia Auto is currently taking orders for a production run of 22 units, with prices starting at 400,000 euros ($473,000 at current exchange rates). Also available from Italy's Totem Automobili is the Alfa Romeo GTA, an electric car with carbon fiber bodywork, priced at 430,000 euros (about $508,670).

These Alfa Romeos are part of a growing trend of modern cars that inherit classic car styling. There is the GTO-engineered Squalo, inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, and the RML short-wheelbase, an homage to the Ferrari 250 GT SWB. A revived version of the Jenson Button-backed British coachbuilder Radford also created a Lotus Type 62-inspired sports car.
